Upper Lamark Lake Backpacking Trip, Bishop, CA

Upper Lamark Lake Backpacking Trip, Bishop, CA

On September 8 we embarked on a very short but incredibly beautiful backpacking trip to Upper Lamarck lake out of North Lake. We left Bishop at 4pm and started the quick 3.7-mile hike at 4:45. This was our 11-month-old, Jemma’s, first backpacking trip so we were trying to keep our load as light as possible while ensuring we had all the baby essentials. The hike was lovely, we enjoyed the setting sun and the emerging fall colors.
We arrived at the Upper Lamarck at 6:15 and started scouting around for a good campground. We scrambled over some boulders and a large granite dome to make our way to the north side of the lake. We had to scramble more cautiously and slowly than normal as I had Jemma strapped to my back. We pitched our tent and started boiling water for dinner just as the sun set at 7:15.
After dinner, we enjoyed some stunning stargazing and then curled up in our sleeping bags for a fairly good nights’ sleep. Jemma slept between Laurence and me, and she slept surprisingly well.
The next morning Laurence got up around 5:45 to scout out a good place to catch the sunrise and I nursed Jemma in the tent before getter her bundled up and heading out to catch the sunrise as well.
Unfortunately, I failed to find Laurence, and although I would have enjoyed watching the sunrise with him we both got very nice pictures from different vantage points and got to share our photos with one another later that day, so it’s kind of like we got to watch 2 sunrises with each other? No?
After we caught the sunrise we started packing up and made our breakfast, instant coffee with powdered coconut milk and quick oats with powdered coconut milk, freeze-dried blueberries, and raspberries – surprisingly good!
Once we finished breakfast and packed up we started a leisurely hike down to the carpark. It was a lovely morning and we thoroughly enjoyed the easy downhill trail. We stopped for some photos at the lookout over Grass Lake.
