Still Open Despite Fire at the Bivy

building at Eastside Bivy in flames

Due to a serious fire that occurred on our property on May 19, (see details below)
we have 11 of our 18 rooms out of commission for the time being.
We are working tirelessly with the help and support of our community
to get these rooms back up as quickly as possible.
Please be patient as we navigate this unbelievable event.

We will post updates here regularly.

You may or may not have heard about the tragic events that happened in the early morning hours of May 19. We were awakened to the news that the Bivy was on fire.

It was a terrifying scene as one of our 5 buildings was almost completely engulfed in flames – and the fire quickly spread to a second building.
Our property was 100% occupied that night with all 18 of our rooms full of precious lives. Thankfully due to the heroic efforts of our police and fire departments and our guests (one of whom was a first responder,) all of our guests made it out with only a couple minor injuries; but as you can imagine, much emotional trauma.

It has been determined that the cause was arson. Thankfully the suspect was in custody within 12 hours of the event thanks to stellar work by police, fire, and district attorney personnel – see news release here. The authorities assure us that this act was not directed at our business, our family, or any of our employees specifically. The perpetrator was from out-of-town and charged with use/under influence of controlled substance and possession of unlawful paraphernalia (among other charges); but we are waiting for a more detailed report. We can assure you this sort of thing is extremely uncommon in our small and relatively safe town.

We are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. While we are devastated by the damage to our property and by the intent behind this act, we choose to TRUST that God will work this out for good. We know he protected and saved the lives of those who escaped the fire. We are thankful to still have operational rooms separate and a significant distance away from the fire damage and look forward to continuing to provide a special place to relax, rest, and find comfort as you explore the beauty of God’s creation that surrounds our town of Bishop.

Isaiah 61:3 says:
God will provide for those who grieve…
He will bestow on them a crown of beauty
Instead of ashes,
The oil of joy
Instead of mourning,
And a garment of praise
Instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called
Oaks of righteousness,
A planting of the Lord
For the display of HIS splendor!
